HEADQUATERS OF NLC INVADED: TUC unhappy demands investigation

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has strongly criticized the recent invasion of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat by security operatives, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued by TUC President Festus Osifo, the union expressed its disapproval of the late-night raid on the NLC headquarters, known as Labour House, in Abuja. Osifo described the actions of the security forces as alarming, particularly the reported confiscation of books from the NLC library, allegedly in search of materials related to “End Bad Governance.”

“This troubling incident raises serious concerns about the violation of fundamental rights, such as freedom of speech and expression,” Osifo stated. “The actions of the security operatives represent an overreach of authority and pose a significant threat to democratic principles, which protect peaceful dissent and free expression.”

The TUC views this raid as a direct assault on the rights of Nigerian citizens to express their opinions freely and access information without interference. The union is demanding an immediate and thorough investigation by the Federal Government into the incident, insisting that those responsible for ordering and carrying out the operation be held accountable.

The TUC also called for the swift return of all seized materials to the NLC library and an explanation for the unwarranted raid. “It is essential that Nigerians are reassured that their rights are safeguarded, and that security agencies operate within the bounds of the law, respecting the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution,” Osifo concluded.
