Crystal Palace Demoted, Nottingham Forest Promoted: UEFA’s Europa League Shake-Up Explained

Crystal palace demoted to conference leauge stage

In a dramatic twist to the 2025/26 European football season, Crystal Palace has been officially demoted to the UEFA Conference League, while Nottingham Forest has been promoted to the Europa League, following a controversial ruling by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body A B.

Why Was Crystal Palace Demoted?

Crystal Palace earned their Europa League spot by winning the FA Cup in May, defeating Manchester City in a historic final C. However, UEFA regulations prohibit clubs with shared ownership from competing in the same European competition. The issue stems from American businessman John Textor, who held significant stakes in both Crystal Palace (43%) and French club Lyon (90%) A C.

Despite Textor’s claims that he had no “decisive influence” over Palace’s management decisions, UEFA concluded that the multi-club ownership rule had been breached as of the March 1 deadline D. Lyon, having successfully appealed their domestic relegation, was reinstated into Ligue 1 and cleared to enter the Europa League, edging out Palace due to their higher league finish B E.

Palace now faces the possibility of appealing the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but as it stands, they will compete in the Conference League.

Why Was Nottingham Forest Promoted?

Nottingham Forest finished 7th in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on automatic qualification for the Europa League F. Initially slated for the Conference League, Forest’s fortunes changed when UEFA ruled against Palace’s eligibility.

Forest’s promotion marks their first return to European competition in 30 years, a milestone celebrated by fans and club officials alike G H. Under the leadership of Evangelos Marinakis, Forest has enjoyed a record-breaking season, doubling their points tally from the previous year and proving they belong on the continental stage.
